Mary Higgins Clark inspired me to write mysteries, but this is definitely not one of her best. First, the title has no relation to the story at all that I can see. Secondly, the text is poorly edited and there are some clumsy word sequences that the Clark novel of the past would never have had. Thirdly, there is a constant repetition of plot points, so annoying to the reader and (4) long, long courtroom testimony that might have been taken directly from the dry pages of the court reporter's transcript. On the positive side, the adopted child plot line is interesting, though the resolution was obvious early on. The story's wrap-up is suspenseful and satisfying. If MHC's famous name hadn't been on this story, I don't think it would have even made it through the transom.Product details

Doing what she does best! Couldn't put it down...fast, easy read...full of suspense ..looking forward to the next one! You'll love it
I zipped right through not wanting to put it down. MHC keeps me chasing rabbit trails almost to the end. I actually figured out who did it before the end. I wanted to ring Betsy Grant's attorney's neck. I'm with Delaney on being able to defend her better. Love Alvirah and Willy. Al remains as tenacious as a bulldog. Loves Music, Lives to Dance was my first MHC, and not a one has disappointed yet.
I think I've read all of Mary Higgins Clark's mysteries, and I always enjoy them and come back for more. This is not one of her best books, but it is an appealing story. The two plot lines involve Betsy Grant, a woman on trial for the murder of her husband, a doctor with Alzheimer's, and Delaney Wright, a young TV reporter who is covering the trial and who wants desperately to find her birth mother. To assist in her search, Delaney seeks the help of Alvirah and Willy Meehan, recurring characters in many of Ms. Clark's books, and I found their presence very welcome here. I thought the story was somewhat slow getting started--the trial begins on page 32, but it took a while for it to become compelling. I also found it quite predictable--there was one plot development that I had not anticipated, but most of it was quite easy to figure out. There were several revelations--bombshells to the characters if not the readers--which occurred in the last line of chapters, and we never had the pleasure of seeing how the person reacted to the amazing information. In spite of these flaws, however, I found this an enjoyable story with a satisfying ending. Fans of Mary Higgins Clark will not want to miss it.
I have always enjoyed reading MHC novels, from the beginning her first novel "Where Are The Children". So, whenever I find myself in kind of a funk I go to MHC, she never disappoints. Since I read at least 4 books at any given time these novels help me pick up my pace and they're always a great summer read with enough romance and suspense to hold your interest.
My favorite character is Sharky - he's got a lot of personality. However, he's one of the elements of luck that pervade this book. No detective work. No suspense. Just a lot of being in the right place at the right time and running into the right person who will supply the information needed, and of people behaving stupidly at the perfect time. A pleasant read, but that's about all. It ranks at the bottom of MHC's list, as far as I'm concerned.
Five stars definitely, I've been a Mary Higgins Clark fan for more years than I can remember. I've read all her books and has never been dissatisfied, this one is no different, I loved it. Keep up the good works. I recommend this book to everyone. Keep them coming.
As usual.....Mary has put together a marvelous book. With multiple plots, it still flows and you do not get lost from chapter to chapter. You can easily pick up from plot to plot. She never leaves you with the thought......now where did that leave off? It flows!!!! To top that each part of the book is interesting reading. Good story lines. You don't want to put it down!
